The long-standing and most talked about awards scheme on the
Ghanaian entertainment calendar, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards came off on
7th May at the Accra International Conference Center with jaw dropping
surprises.
The 2016 edition of the VGMAs had somewhat shocking occurrences as to
who won what in the various categories in which these deserving Ghanaian
and non Ghanaian artistes were nominated.
The VGMAs had several categories and in each section of the
nominations, some musicians stood a greater chance of winning but lost
whereas in other categories some musicians were least expected to win
took home awards.
At the just ended Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Atom’s “Ye wo krom”
took everyone by surprise as it was awarded Hiplife song of the year. He
beat out strong competition from Donzy (Crusade ft Kofi Kinaata), E.L
(Koko), Wisa ( Ekiki me ft Luther) and VVIP (Skolom ft Sena Dagadu).
Mzvee’s award Best Female Vocalist award amazed a lot of the audience
as they all expected Efya to win since she’s been winning the category
for some years now.
In the Best Male Vocalist category one may have thought Afriyie, De
Voice, Mugeez or Akwaboah Jnr could have won in the category but the
legendary Pat Thomas proved his longevity in the industry to these young
male vocalists.
Bisa Kdei on the night also won several awards but what came as a
shocker was his Best Album of the year award. Although the Verified
album (Mzvee), Mary (Sarkodie), Elorm (E.L) and SP Kofi Sarpong’s “I
Believe” album were in the same category Bisa Kdei managed to take home
the award with his “Breakthrough” album.
Though everyone rooted for SP Kofi Sarpong’s “Hour by hour” to win in
the Gospel song of the year category, Nicholas Omane Acheampong didn’t
make that dream a reality.
Kofi Kinaata proved his talent in this highly competitive category,
Song writer of the year. The category had music giants like Rex Omar,
Knii LAnte, Obrafour, Stonebwoy and Mzvee but Kofi defied all the odds
with his “Susuka” hit.
Being the 17th edition the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards it took off in
a grand style and some errors in the past years were rectified.
Speaking about the red carpets both nominees and patrons looked their
very best. The most interesting part of this year’s edition is that, the
event stated on time and closed just on time.
