Life as a high-profile entertainer looks fulfilling from the outside,
but at the heart of it all, your favorite rapper is a human being
influenced by the world around them. With all the glitz and the glamor,
the money, the fame, people waiting at arm’s length to do whatever is
commanded of them and the supporters, it’s often easy to forget that
they’re big fans of other artists as well.
Every now and again, fans get to witness a rapper pay homage to
someone they look up to or cherish. Occasionally, artists perform a
cover of a song that really made an impact on their life. As a fan,
that’s an incredible moment to see. Just a few weeks ago, during the
first weekend of Coachella 2016 in Indio, Calif., rising rhymer Post Malone performed a cover of Nirvana’s 1992 hit song “Lithium,” off their influential album Nevermind. The Dallas native decided to grab a guitar for the moment and rock out in true Kurt Cobain fashion.
Rappers who are genuine fans of other artists (whether current or past) are never afraid to display their appreciation. Kanye West has surprised his legion of supporters by covering a surprising rock ode while Drake took a shot at performing one of ‘Ye’s Yeezus
tracks. Plus there’s many more hip-hop staples that have tried their
hand at living up to fellow artists’ original songs. Check out 10
